The Importance of the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC)

In the early 1980s, the Indian poultry industry faced a severe crisis when the selling price of eggs fell below the production cost. In response to this crisis, a group of poultry farmers, led by individuals like Dr. B. V. Rao Ji and Ch. Jagapati Rao Ji, embarked on a nationwide campaign. Their objective was to unite poultry farmers across India under the slogan “My EGG My Price.” Through extensive efforts and over 300 meetings, they successfully formed a united organization known as the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) in May 1982.

The NECC played a significant role in supporting poultry farmers and traders by establishing a mechanism for determining egg prices. It facilitated communication with poultry farmers, provided various services such as support operations, consumer education, egg promotion campaigns, marketing and research, and rural marketing development.

India’s Egg Production and Potential

India is the third-largest producer of eggs globally, with a daily production of 22 crores (220 million) eggs. China ranks first with a daily production of 130 crores (1.3 billion) eggs, followed by the USA with 28 crores (280 million) eggs. The demand for eggs in India is rising, and the poultry industry is growing at a rate of 8 to 10% per annum. Currently, India has a per capita consumption of 60 eggs, whereas the per capita consumption in the USA and China stands at 290 and 300 eggs, respectively. With room for increased consumption, the Indian poultry industry has significant growth potential.

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are leading states in egg production, while Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal are major consuming states.

Profitability and Benefits of Poultry Farming

Poultry farming is considered a highly profitable business with substantial returns on investment. It requires minimal initial investment and can be developed within a short duration. Effective management of layering chickens, feed, disease control, and marketing are crucial aspects of poultry farming. Egg production is generally more profitable than meat chicken farming as it provides a steady income with minimal maintenance.

Factors Affecting Egg Prices

The wholesale price of eggs in India is influenced by various factors, including:

  1. Bird Flu Outbreak: Outbreaks of bird flu can cause sharp differences in egg prices and demand, impacting the market for weeks.
  2. Pandemic: During periods of lockdowns and restrictions, the demand for eggs may decrease.
  3. Festive Season: Egg consumption tends to be lower during festival seasons, such as in Tamil Nadu, where many people avoid non-vegetarian food.
  4. Summer Season: Consumption of poultry products typically decreases during the summer, which can affect egg prices.
  5. Christmas Season: Egg prices are higher in November and December due to increased demand for eggs during Christmas. Eggs are used in large quantities for cake production during Christmas and New Year.
  6. School Reopening: Egg prices tend to increase during June and July when schools reopen. Many states serve eggs to students as part of their afternoon meal schemes.

Overview of Namakkal Egg Market

Namakkal is a major poultry hub and the largest supplier of poultry products in South India. Approximately 65% of the total egg production in Tamil Nadu comes from Namakkal. Poultry products, including eggs, broiler chickens, and hatching eggs, are exported to neighboring states such as Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and other northern states. The demand for Namakkal eggs continues to increase due to their quality and taste.

The NECC determines the daily egg rates in Namakkal, which serve as a benchmark for determining egg prices in Kerala, Karnataka, and other parts of South India.

Barwala Egg Rate and Production

Barwala, located in Haryana, is another significant poultry hub in India. It has a daily egg production capacity of 1 crore (10 million) eggs. With over 200 poultry farms, Barwala employs over 1,500 workers who are involved in daily operations.

Eggs produced in Barwala are consumed in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, and other states. The NECC determines the egg rates in Barwala, taking into account factors such as demand and supply.
